U.S. release date announced for Bowie’s Station to Station reissue

July 9, 2010

EMI America has issued a press release today regarding the upcoming reissue for David Bowie’s 1976 album Station to Station. It highlights further details of the content (including the exact edits of E.P. of singles included in the deluxe edition, among other things).

Most importantly, the press release finally confirms the U.S. release date for special edition and deluxe edition releases of this album: Sept. 28. That would be a week and a day after the U.K. release hits store shelves. Without further ado, here is the announcement from EMI, word for word:

2. TVC15
Released in edited form as the second single from Station To Station (RCA 2682) in April 1976. The single peaked on the singles charts at number 33 in the UK and number 64 in the U.S.

3. Stay
This edit was released as the third single from Station To Station in the US (RCA PB 10736) in July 1976 and several other countries outside the UK.

4. Word On A Wing
Appearing on the reverse of the original Stay single (RCA PB 10736) in July 1976, this particular edit is making its official debut here on CD.

5. Station To Station
This is an extremely edited version (down from 10 minutes 13 seconds) appeared on a very rare French factory single sample (RCA 42549) in 1976. This edit eliminates the entire first part of the song. This marks its first official release.

[end press release]

So the single edits are the only real diversion we are getting from the album, besides the various mixes of the album tracks. No B-sides existed from these sessions, not to mention any officially available outtakes or unofficial studio leaks that I know of. Correct me if I am wrong, fellow Bowie fans (and provide any mp3s to back that up, too).

I’ll leave with a nice, big advertisement promoting the album and Bowie’s then U.S. tour. Reminisce…

  1. Ray Says:

There was a recording of his Bruce Springsteen cover of “It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City” that has come out officially on THE BEST OF BOWIE 1974/1979. Allegedly it was recorded during the STS sessions. I’m wondering why the EP did not also include the edited version of Wild Is The Wind, which is the audio you hear in the 1982 black and white video of the song. I’ve used Wave Pad editing software to recreate it. Let me know if you want an mp3 of it.
And wasn’t “Sister Midnight” also performed at the Uniondale show?

    • indieethos Says:

Hey, Ray, thanks for the post. You bring up some good points. Indeed “It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City” was recorded during STS. I recall reading that it was a fast recording session overall, so who knows how many outtakes do really exist, especially outtakes Bowie would permit for official release. Bowie is notoriously reticent about outtakes, and that song does stand out as weak compared to everything else on STS. Springsteen himself was at the recording session, and did not like it, I seem to recall reading in the liner notes for the Sound+Vision box set released in 1989 (where the outtake first appeared in official form).

You’re not the only one wondering why the “Wild is the Wind” video edit was not thrown in there. I’ve seen others on Bowie message boards complain as such. I’d certainly be curious to hear your mp3 mix of it. Maybe I can share it on my blog for others, too. I do plan on reviewing the final complete box set. It would be perfect for that post.

As for “Sister Midnight,” I read in “the Illustrated Bowie Story” by Stuart Hoggard, that Bowie played it on the second night of the Nassau show, which must have been added after the tour dates advertised in the image above. It did air on FM radio, though. I would have so been interested myself to hear Bowie’s early version of “Sister Midnight.” I love that song in its many manifestations over the years.

  2. Ray Says:

Give me an email address to send WITW to.

    • indieethos Says:

      Done deal! Check your email.

      • Ray Says:

Did you get the file okay? I’ve got a few more creations to share. From the recent “SPACE ODDITY” 40th anniversary set, track “Memory Of A Free Festival (Parts 1 & 2)” edited together to make one song. Flawless! I’ve got the 7″ edit of “John I’m Only Dancing (Again).
I have the “SERIOUS MOONLIGHT” dvd concert song performances broken down into individual mp3s, which play back on an iPod really cool.
Also, I never liked the single edit version of “Young Americans”. I duplicated the exact spots on their version, but mine doesn’t have that annoying vacuum effect that is on the official release.

      • indieethos Says:

Thanks for sharing. yes, got it fine. It’s a great approximation, but there is some weird echo going on. What CD was your source. or was that an added effect on your part? But you know what I realize? Upon refreshing my memory of the edit, I looked up the video on YouTube, and that video came out during ‘Scary Monsters;’ it was never an edit during the STS time. Maybe that’s why it’s not part of the set. Still, I do agree it should be there on that 5th CD. Yes, I do invite you to share more of your mixes. I never tire of Bowie!

  3. Ray Says:

I also have the 1985 RCA STS cd. I have all of the RCA titles on cd, including the hardest to come across of them all, the German STAGE cd.

    • indieethos Says:

Man, you’re lucky to have all those RCAs. When I got around to getting a CD player, the RCAs had already gone out of print, so it was a struggle getting them but a fun hunt!
